Copywriter/Editor/Owner/Tea Boy
I’m passionate about words and communication is a big part of my life. I read a lot, especially on the internet and view it as my life’s work to improve the quality of what I see.
I have only ever had five proper jobs in the last twenty years. I left school and started a bakery apprenticeship when I was sixteen and qualified when I was twenty one.
After becoming disenchanted with the early mornings, I left and worked for the UK Benefits Agency as a Visiting and Fraud Officer. This got me interested in social issues and people in general. It also taught me more about life in two years than all my others so far.
Then came a break, I moved towns and got a job in a call centre for a company called Energis who were a telecommunications company. I soon worked my way up the ranks until I was qualified as an engineer and worked in the Network Operation Centre.
I learned lots of geeky stuff like how to maintain and repair Nortel Switches, Windows Servers, Cisco routers, switches and ICM. After five years of shifts I yearned for a job where I could work in daylight, and it was time for a move.
"See the light."
I secured a role with Virgin Media assisting the launch of their Movies on Demand product. Finally I could work during the day with real people and have free time at the weekend!
I ended up writing more than I engineered and my love of writing was finally realised. I worked as the Principal Engineer on this project for two years until they wanted me to work in the dark again.
After that came Cable and Wireless, where I worked as a Support Engineer. I ended up spending more time teaching staff, writing training material and creating documentation here, but by now I was loving it!
I studied copywriting and acquired an Advanced Copywriting Certificate and decided to learn as much about writing as I could while still holding down a job. I wrote everything from press releases, brochures, fault reports, training manuals, website copy and marketing material. I stayed in this role for nearly three years until, like many other IT jobs, it was outsourced to India.
"Going it alone."
So, full of a desire to try it on my own, Huxleymedia was born. I enjoy the responsibility of making my own way while mixing creativity with business. All my previous roles have combined to make me a resilient, technically astute, ambitious, knowledgeable person which is serving me well.
